Blister Packaging Technologies in Pharmaceuticals – ALU–ALU & ALU–PVC: What’s the Difference?
In the pharmaceutical industry, a tablet must not only be formulated correctly — it must also be properly protected. Blister packaging plays a vital role in shielding active ingredients from moisture, oxygen, and light, ensuring product stability throughout its shelf life.

📌 Today, the two most common blister packaging technologies are:
✅ ALU–ALU (Cold Forming)
– Formed by cold pressing aluminum with a mold, without using heat
– Consists of two tightly pressed aluminum layers, creating a completely sealed blister
– Ideal for sensitive drugs such as biologics, specialty medicines, and antibiotics

✅ ALU–PVC/PPC (Thermoforming)
– Uses heat to shape plastic (PVC or PPC), then seals with an aluminum layer
– High production speed, cost-effective
– Suitable for general pharmaceuticals, supplements, and common tablets
